It’s fair to say that my first time racing at The Mountain was interesting. There was certainly a mixture of positives throughout the weekend, but we also learnt a few things along the way.
Mount Panorama sure is something else; the track, facilities, atmosphere, weather – these are what make it one of the best tracks around the world and to have been able to race around there this weekend, was just phenomenal.
Thursday’s two practice sessions were lots of fun in the wet! It sure tested my concentration – but it felt good to finish up P12 and P6. I had a lot of confidence going into Friday’s qualifying where we managed to come away with our best result yet – fourth!! Unfortunately, we had a safety issue with our roll cage, which forced us to park our Brema Group Toyota 86 for the remainder of the weekend.
Thankfully, competitor Dylan Thomas leased us his spare Toyota 86 – which my dad and the crew drove six hours to collect. They managed to get it back to Bathurst and worked on it all of Friday night in preparation for Saturday’s two races.
Due to the safety issue we encountered in qualifying, we had to start from the rear of the grid for Race 1, where we finished up 26th from 37th. Unfortunately, a red flag was issued and the race didn’t count for the entire field.
Race 2 I brought it home 27th and Race 3 in 24th. It sure was tough conditions trying to fight through the pack from the rear of the grid – but I had a fantastic time nonetheless.
A huge thank you to my dad and all the crew for your support and help over the weekend and preparing a whole new car! I am extremely grateful for that and a big thanks to Dylan Thomas for lending me the spare car.
A big thanks also to CAMS and official; Peter Kemp, the Toyota 86 Series organisers, AirTime Autosport and Jason Bargwanna for their support in helping me to get back out for the rest of the weekend after Friday’s incident.
I’d also like to say thanks to all my sponsors and supporters for your on-going backing – it means a lot!
Now, it’s back to work for me… until the final round of the series, Newcastle 500, November 23-25!
